Xavier malicious code found in 800 Android apps

After Judy malicious script which affected almost all weak Android applications in Google playstore, now a new script called Xavier malicious code has been rolling out in over 800 Android applications in Google playstore. However Google maintains high-security standards while approving Android applications into the playstore, but some of the apps have affected with Xavier script because of their weak security features.

TrendLabs which is popularly known as internet security analyzer claimed that they detected a malicious Xavier ad library script on 800 Android apps which have been downloaded million times from the playstore. The company security analyzer also said that most of the affected Android apps are found in utility categories such as wallpaper downloads ringtone and photo manipulators.

History of Xavier malicious code

The TrendLabs Company also said that this malicious code existed on playstore for over two years at First it is called as Joymobile script appeared in 2015. TrendLabs also mentioned that finding malicious Xavier code using static or dynamic analysis isn’t that easy. In addition to above statement, the security lab also said that the Xavier malicious code is capable of downloading and executing other malicious scripts which might further increase the damage.

By looking at the reports unveiled by TrendLabs Company, most of the victims who has affected with the Xavier code are from Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Reports states that over 23.27 % users from Vietnam have downloaded the affected applications from playstore, while the 8.23% and 19.14% affected users are from Indonesia and Philippines countries. Taiwan and Thailand countries are on the bottom of the list with 5.36% and 6.66% results respectively, approximately over 37.34% affected users are from all over the world.

Security analyzers from all over the world are claiming that the new Xavier malicious code will be easy spreads compared to previous Judy virus which was observed only in 41 Android apps on Playstore. Judy malicious script affected more than 8.5million to 36.5 million users throughout the world, comparing to previous results we may expect that new Xavier code will affect more than the above results.

The previous Judy virus was created mainly due to perform false clicks on ads to make revenue for people who’ve created, but when it comes to Xavier code, it has a capability to install other malicious scripts on user mobiles. Finding Xavier code on mobiles is a difficult task because it is constantly changing its strings which make it unidentifiable.
