Peggy Whitson’s achievements sets a new record in spacewalk
Peggy Whitson’s achievements have set a new record in the spacewalk; Peggy Whitson is an American chief astronaut. The spacewalks let the astronauts carry out science experiments outside and repair certain parts of the satellite for future use. Sunita Williams, a famous astronaut, has made a record of seven spacewalks in her career. Peggy Whitson has beat the record set by Williams by successfully completing her eighth spacewalk at the age of 57.
Peggy Whitson’s achievements:
Whitson’s spacewalks and works:
Ms. Whitson completed her doctorate in biochemistry. In 2002, under Expedition 5, she accomplished her first spacewalk.A spacewalk is defined as an extravehicular activity when astronauts come out of the vehicle and walk in space.
Whitson served as the first female commander in the space station for the year 2007. Her last spacewalk was on January 6th, when she inspected the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and installed lithium-ion batteries. Presently, Ms.Peggy is a working member of Expedition 50. In the month of April, she commandeered the Expedition 51.
Robert Shane Kimbrough, a NASA Astronaut, accompanied Peggy Whitson in her eighth spacewalk. The journey started at 7:29 a.m. and they spent seven hours four minutes working outside the orbiting lab. She broke the record for the cumulative spacewalking time.
Sunita Williams had a cumulative spacewalking record of 50 hours and 40 minutes. Peggy Whitson has set new standards racking up a total time of 53 hours and 22 minutes.
The spacewalk facilitated them to re-install the Pressurized Mating Adapter(PMA-3). Whitson reconnected the cables and removed the thermal cover in such a way that there was some space for the new International Docking Adapter, that is scheduled to arrive by 2018.
But, this task did not go well and led to a loss of equipment in space. After Kimbrough had finished installing a new external computer, he and Whitson met at the airlock to retrieve two pairs of axial shields, near the Tranquility module, where PMA-3 exists. Removing the PMA-3, it left the docking port at Node 3 exposed. The guards give protection from micrometeoroids.
Before the astronauts could strap down the shields, one accidentally slipped away and drifted out of reach. The crew at the NASA’s Space Center then came up with a solution. They asked the Astronauts to retrieve the cover that Whitson removed and asked to them wrap that cover on the exposed part of Node-3. This cover, basically a cloth shield is orbiting the earth, ahead of the space station and has no harm.
Both of them accomplished the task assigned to them. Despite that, they took some photos to examine common berthing mechanism at Node2. These pictures will help NASA to work efficiently in future aspects before the commercial spacecraft can dock there.
Peggy Whitson is an inspirational model to everyone, as she could re-write the history of spacewalkers. Her last mission as a commander in the spacewalk was in the month of April.
