NASA’s first ever mission to study about Neutron stars & Pulsars

On Wednesday American space agency NASA announced that very soon they will going to launch its first ever mission to study more details about the neutron stars and pulsars. Neutron stars are rapidly spinning objects in space which were first discovered 50 years ago by Jocelyn Bell who is a British astrophysicist.

How Neutron stars and pulsars created?

Whenever a giant star explodes in supernovas, and the core of stars collapses, then the released protons and electrons melts into each other which forms a neutron particles. All these neutron particles will be combined forming a neutron star; however, the neutron stars are smaller with a radius of 10km but they can have masses more than twice of the sun mass.

NASA first discovered neutron stars and pulsars back in 1939 and later in 1967 it was confirmed and studied more about neutron stars and pulsars. NASA described that these space objects are created after big explosion due to the fail of nuclear fuel and collapsed into small sized spheres which almost equal to the size of New York state.

SpaceX CRS-11

In order to study more about neutron stars, NASA plans to launch two-in-one Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) which will be aboard to space through SpaceX CRS-11 satellite, and it also carries Falcon 9 rocket to space.

Neutron stars investigation project will collect all possible information about the neutron stars and densest object in the universe. Along with the study of neutron stars, SpaceX CRS-11 mission also focusses on Pulsars which is a highly magnetized rotating neutron star that emits a vast amount of electromagnetic radiation.

Neutron stars behavior

Neutron stars can be observed by following behaviors such as very hot surface temperatures up to 6X10^5 K and the Neutron stars are so dense just like a matchbox if it has neutron-star material will filled with it, it would have mass of 3 Billion tonnes and the magnetic field strengths between 10^8 and 10^15 times strong as earth.

One of the NASA’s scientists Keith Gendreau said that ‘Neutron stars study mission is the first ever project in NASA’s history and we’re very serious about this project.’ The team behind the neutron stars mission are already completed and delivered that satellite which contains 56 X-ray telescopes and silicon detectors.

Zaven Arzoumanian who has been working as NICER deputy principal investigator said that NICER team collected enough data to study about neutron stars, but to extend research we require more clear information about the neutron stars and pulsar’s behavior.
