Chernobyl new recovery approach
In 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is located near Pripyat, Ukraine. Due to uncontrolled reaction conditions in the core, water flashed into steam. Hence, an explosion occurred on a large scale in the power plant that took lives of many people. This article discusses one of the giant structures developed by the engineers of the power plant that disposes of the radioactive waste.
CHERNOBYL DOME STRUCTURE:
DIMENSIONS AND MATERIAL:
The Chernobyl dome structure design is an arch-shaped steel structure with an internal height of 92.5 meters (303.5 ft). It has a 12-metre (39.4 ft) distance between the centers of the upper and lower arch chords. The dimensions of the arch were determined based upon the need to operate equipment inside the new shelter and decommission the existing shelter. The overall length of the structure is 150 meters (492.1 ft). An assembly of vertical walls is made around. High strength steel is utilized for the dome-like structure to reduce cost and weight of the assembly.
FOUNDATION OF THE CHERNOBYL DOME:
As the radioactive remains were focused in the Unit 4 of the power plant which was 180 meters away from the site, the Chernobyl structure had to withstand the soil conditions of the unit 4. Since, the soil was mixed with the radio active materials.Hence, site leveling of the contaminated soil has to be done which facilitates the movement of this structure.
MOVEMENT OF THE STRUCTURE:
Two options were considered for moving the structure: Hydraulic jacks to push the structure forward, or pulling the structure with large, multi-stranded steel cables. The first option would require the relocation of the hydraulic jacks after each push. This relocation process would necessitate more worker interaction with the system and a greater worker exposure to radiation. The second option was initially chosen because it would expose workers to a lower radiation dose, and would have moved the structure into its final position in less than 24 hours.
